The fresque at Bridiers 2014

Fesque at Bridiers 2014

The fresque at Bridiers - 1, 2, 3 & 4 August

The annual Fresque Historique de Bridiers takes place before the magnificent scenery of the Tour de Bridiers, a historic site dominated by the dramatic ruins of a 14th century castle. During the play, Bridiers becomes a gigantic open-air theatre with the action taking place across the arena, viewed by an audience of 2000 people seated in a natural amphitheatre.

This year 500 French, British and German volunteers will be acting out the historic
events that took place between 1900 and 1925; from the Great Exhibition of Paris to the start of the roaring twenties. For ninety minutes you’ll be transported from the peaceful Limousin countryside into the midst of the turmoil of the First World War.

This is a story of the men and women of West Creuse who were thrown into that turbulence. The story is told through the experiences of three soldiers – a Frenchman, an Englishman and a German –whose paths cross during the course of the war, each acted by a representative of the three nations.

The vast canvas and the precise detail of the costumes and the historical accuracy of the events depicted produce an exceptional recreation of history. This event uses innovative sound, light and laser technology. Most of the costumes are made by an army of voluntary professional seamstresses, though this year some of the soldiers’ costumes (English and German) were previously used by the BBC. Cannon, aeroplanes, cars and guns have been recreated to match the period.

This is the biggest historical spectacle of its kind taking place in France to commemorate the centenary of the Great War. This year the actors will be French, English and German with people coming from Filderstdadt in Germany and Selby in North Yorkshire alongside some of your compatriots who live in Creuse, Indre and Haute-Vienne. For this reason, the Fresque has been awarded the Label Centenaire, an award for excellence recognising the coming together of all three nations to celebrate peace.
