Futuroscope - Poitiers

Why go? Futuroscope doesn't offer anything as old-hat as rollercoasters. Instead, the thrills that await inside its sleek and jagged glass-covered structures are of the virtual-reality kind, delivered through 3D and even 4D films, and the latest simulation technology.

For example, seats move in sync with what you're viewing. So in Dynamic Vienne, you seem to fly over the rivers of the beautiful Vienne department, and speed through medieval villages in a racing car. Other must-do, high-adrenaline rides with fantastic pretend effects include The Little Prince, a charming, interplanetary journey based on the famous Antoine de Saint-Exupéry story, and Arthur, the 4D Adventure.

More real is Dances With Robots. You're strapped on to the arm of a giant robot that swivels and jerks you around in time with music: very intense - the rest of my family chickened out! There are also several more relaxing and educational IMAX and 3D films.

Visiting tips: Futuroscope is best suited to adults and children aged around eight or older. Most attractions are indoors, so the park is a good option if the weather is poor - though it's busier on those days.

Featuring rousing and clever lighting, aquatic and musical effects, Futuroscope's outdoor evening show is definitely worth staying on for. There are a dozen convenient, but unexciting, hotels in walking distance.

More information: www.futuroscope.com. Tickets £33, children 5-16 £25.
