Museums & Chateaux

Thanks to military art we have the ruins of Chalucet, Châlus or Lastours châteaux… The art of porcelain glows in the Adrien Dubouché National Museum and that of enamelling in the Evêché Museum in Limoges. And modern art isn’t dead, but alive in places such as the Départemental Museum of Contemporary Art in Rochechouart, the International Centre for Art and the Landscape on Ile de Vassivière, Limoges FRAC (regional arts organisation) and the Espace Paul Rebeyrolle in Eymoutiers.

Limoges's porcelain heritage is preserved in this  museum with a display of 15.000 pieces: the world's largest collection of Limoges porcelain. Limoges porcelain became famous worldwide after the discovery of abundant kaolin clay deposits in the region. Kaolin was fervently sought out in the 18th century as it is the main ingredient for porcelain making. The Limoges porcelain factory was created in 1771 and was the second company to create hard porcelain in France (after the Sèvres factory).

Oradour sur Glane's Memorial Centre

Time stood still here ever since that fateful day in June 1944 when all but a handful of the unsuspecting village's inhabitants were rounded up and massacred by the occupying German troups. Immediately after the Liberation, the 15 hectare ruins of the martyred village were classified as a historic monument and remained untouched as a powerful reminder of the barbarism of the Nazi regime and a memorial to the 642 innocent men, women and children who lost their lives.

The Memorial Centre, created in 1999, is the access point to the village ruins and houses a permanent exhibition discussing the historical context and significance of the tragedy, with many documents, maps and photographs.

MUSEUM OF LIMOGES DISTILLERIES

For almost two centuries, Limoges was the city of distilleries. Major trading hub, the city received cognac, armagnac, rum, liqueur wines, cane sugar, fruits, plants and spices, essential for the making of numerous specialities. Limoges had a big quantity of oaks to make barrels, a tasty and pure sort of water, creative and expert labour for a new activity, aside from porcelain, to expand and thrive. Thus, from 1780 to 1930, there were several dozens of distilleries in Limoges.
